Shape-Shifts

  • SYNC Gallery 931 Santa Fe Drive Denver, CO, 80204 United States (map)

Originally Clare Scott was drawn to painting outside, on the spot, painting “en plein air.” While outside she became acutely aware of, nature’s perpetual dance between permanence and change. In this collection, Clare moved inside, to her studio, to paint a continuum of works that range from subtly altered abstracted landscapes to complete abstracts. Using soft pastels, Clare explored the delicate interplay of color, shape, movement, and texture, capturing the essence of nature's enduring transformations.

The common thread that weaves together Debra Livingston's work in this show is the use of circles and squares. She layers geometric shapes over monotypes to achieve depth and complexity of the image. She see the circles and squares as windows or portals into another dimension.

Debra's mini produce paintings are all circular on square canvases. She is inspired by the contemporary Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama, who uses repetitive dots in much of her work. Seen as a group, her paintings of fruits and vegetables become a bright patchwork quilt of circles on squares.

The small square handmade books in this show were made from repurposed etchings. Feel free to hold these little works of art. Turn the pages as the shapes shift to reveal a continuous image layered with circles and squares.
