It is a monthly gallery walk in the Art District on the first calendar Friday of each month, without deviation due to holidays or otherwise. Over 40 art galleries, artist studios and other creative organizations are open until about 9:30PM that night. Some stay open later, some close a bit sooner, but all are closed by about 10:30. Fir st Fr iday is hugely popular and can have up to 7,000 art lovers attending on a spring, summer or fall evening. It is wonderful anytime that many people come out to see art! Come early, 5:00-7:30, if you want more "private time" with the art. After about 8:00 it can get crowded on the sidewalks and in the galleries, but is an upbeat people watchers' delight!
Yes, plenty! In addition to our member restaurants Rackhouse Pub, Interstate Kitchen & Bar and Studio 6 coffee house, there are about a dozen other places to eat and drink, from authentic Mexican food, to pizza, to the region's best Ethiopian restaurant, to brew pubs, and Denver's oldest continuously operating restaurant serving Colorado classics such as rattlesnake and Rocky Mountain "oysters.". Yes, we have them too! In fact, they became so popular here that we have now set up a special food truck location on 7th Avenue between Santa Fe Dr. and Kalamath St. You'll find a variety of Denver's best food trucks there.
Good question! We have tried that in the past, with mixed results. The main issue is cost. Believe it or not, it costs thousands and thousands of dollars to get permits, insurance, port-o-potties, detour signs, barricades, police, plus someone to manage it all on a monthly basis. To pay for the costs we'd have to obtain sponsors, lease booth space, and find other revenue sources. We've done this, but the night then becomes more of a carnival fair than a gallery walk. Maybe once every year or two we'll do this, but it is not desired or practical to do each month. Perhaps the city of Denver will one day help us with costs to do this more often, but we don't see that happening soon.
We're trying to. Planning has begun with Denver agencies to study this.
We run a free guided-shuttle coach on First Fridays and have a fair amount of parking on public streets and private lots throughout the Art District. See the Visitor Info page of our web site for directions, transportation options, parking areas and our shuttle coach.
On the Third Friday of each month about 20 of us are open late for a more intimate version of the art walk. Many galleries hold their more traditional exhibit openings on this night. It is a quieter evening and offers a preview of the month's exhibit and a better chance to speak privately with owners and exhibiting artists. Third Friday of each month, 5:30–8:30PM.
Yes! We are professionally operating businesses maintaining regular hours of operation. Hours vary by business, but most are open TU-SAT each week, 10AM-5PM. Some open extended hours, including Sundays and Mondays. Check individual member pages or call them directly for exact operating hours of each member business.
Each gallery has their own criteria for selecting its artists. Best advice is to view each member gallery on the web, and then visit the ones you think may be a fit for your style and level of work. You can call the gallery in advance and make an appointment, or visit them in person, but not when they are busy! Trying to show your work to a gallery owner on a First Friday or opening reception when it is the exhibiting artist's night to shine and the gallery's night to make sales is the surest way to not ever exhibit there.
Yes. We have an Event Hosting tab on our web site that shows you which members rent their space. Check it out and then contact them directly.
