Established in 1973, NEWSED’s mission is to promote and develop economic, community programs and projects that raise the income, educational and political levels of West Denver residents. Our goals are to:
To serve as a catalyst for the comprehensive economic development of the Santa Fe Drive Corridor, (the commercial heart of Denver’s West Side)
Improve the atmosphere and physical appearance of the Santa Fe Drive Corridor.
Be a dynamic and proactive agency that increases the quality of, and access to, affordable housing opportunities for low to moderate-income residents.
Be the premier sponsor of events that celebrate Latino culture, heritage and traditions.
NEWSED’s first economic development initiative, Zocalo Shopping Center, built in 1979 was the first new retail/commercial space created for the La Alma Lincoln Park Neighborhood in twenty years.
NEWSED wrote the concept paper for The Parkway Center that was submitted to HUD by the City of Denver. As a result the city received a $13.5 million Urban Development Action Grant, which generated a project in excess of $110 million dollars. This project created over 1100 units of housing, an office complex and a King Soopers grocery store. This project was the impetus for the redevelopment of Santa Fe Drive. NEWSED administered two million of the grant that was used for loans, grants, street scaping, fix-up and repair for every house and street in the La Alma/Lincoln Park Neighborhood.
