Close to the Edge is a new series of mixed media paintings by Patrick Zoller.
Zoller combines processes first utilized by the Abstract Expressionists and Colorfield Painters to create these textural works that explore ways to activate the picture plane.
While focusing on the formal qualities of line, color, and texture; Zoller’s work comes across visceral and immediate.
Unlike the concept of the original colorfield painters, who stressed the flatness of the picture plane and denied any illusion to a pictoral depth, Zoller’s new work will hint to a visual depth created within the ripples and undulating forms of paint laying on the surface of each canvas. The subject of these paintings, however, remains first and foremost color, as it was with the founders of this style of paintings in the 1950’s and 60’s. The use of metallic and iridescent paint provides a slight color alteration when viewed at different angles or from a varying source of light.
Zoller studied with Richard Pousette-Dart (one of the original Abstract Expressionists and founders of the New York School of painters along with Pollock and Rothko) at the Art Students League in New York.
He also attended the Ridgewood School of Art & Design in New Jersey. Zoller has shown in galleries throughout Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Wyoming through a career spanning more than 30 years.
