Newly appointed to the City of Boulder Board of Trustees for Open Space and Mountain Parks, Molly has long demonstrated the important role art can play in preservation by promoting passive use and documenting the changing landscape.
For the past two years, Molly has created a series of paintings documenting an area of Boulder Creek at GPS intervals with the goal of creating a virtual art show along the trail that includes history and information concerning the area. Join Molly for a discussion of her project, the history of Open Space in Boulder, and the future our open lands and national parks.

In that sense, they are works of science fiction. While revolutionary technologies often bring convenience and efficiency to our lives, their long-term effects are never fully understood. The digital technology used to produce these images exists outside of the physical/material world. I’m interested in how this technology eventually manifests into something tangible.
See coupon for details.

The Denver Art Museum takes a wide-ranging look at textiles from pre-Columbian weavings to Navajo blankets to an examination of clothing in art and photography in the campus-wide exhibition Spun: Adventures in Textiles.

The museum’s newly opened and renovated textile art galleries and its inaugural show Cover Story are at the heart of this campus-wide event.

Spun also features special in-gallery moments, like a stunning seventeenth-century painting by the Master of the Blue Jeans and Flash of Red, Glint of Gold: Woven Riches of South America, which showcases vivid, multidimensional works created by South American artists in workshops separated by hundreds of miles and more than five centuries of history.

There also is extensive programming encouraging visitors to join in the exploration of this vibrant medium, including a drop-in Quilt Studio, collaborative projects with artists and creative groups, new in-gallery opportunities supported by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Institute For Figuring’s Crochet Coral Reef project, a dye garden, and an artist-in-residency with Marie Watt.

The drawings are inspired by his early experiences in art, but are executed with the whimsical style, detail, and imaginative symbolism that have become hallmarks of his work. In this series of twelve drawings, he reimagines a wide variety of subjects both literal and figurative, including the physical landscapes and horizons of Colorado, methods of communication, and the sense of home and belonging and love. His new drawings, along with three new more experimental paintings, will be on display at Kanon Collective during the month of June.

Showalter’s on-going project, which also includes a book scheduled for release in 2014, was created he says, “to inspire and educate about the remarkable sagebrush lands that are the heart of the American West, while showing impacts where industrialized energy development has fragmented habitat in one of the most imperiled ecosystems on earth- the Sagebrush Sea.” From Greater Yellowstone to Telluride, Showalter photographed from airplanes and blinds, and traversed by foot over mountaintops to give an expansive view of this stunning landscape. “I’ve also slept in gas fields that are never dark or quiet. It’s a journey of discovery and importance.”

The gallery welcomes the viewer to explore the Sagebrush ecosystem, its inhabitants, and to learn about the importance of Western conservation for the future of the American West.

Winter’s paintings affirm the ways in which light can emerge from seemingly dark times in our lives, and that times of difficulty can, in fact, provide openings of illumination, wisdom and guidance for our lives.

Leonard Cohen’s song “Anthem” captures the intent of this work:

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.

There is an irony to Cohen’s lyrics—that light gets in, not because things are perfect, but because everything has a crack in it, and that we should look for those openings, those opportunities in life that allow us to “ring the bells that still can ring” as a way of shining our light into the world.

In these paintings Cyncie conveys that irony by intentionally juxtaposing deep tapestries of rich, layered color, against clean, white islands of vibrant white. Working mostly without a brush and within a palette of blues and greens on canvases of different sizes, she paints a complex world that affirms the beauty and depth through which a path of light must travel, to arrive at its destination.

Gleitz states, “It seems to me that almost everything boils down to choice…I choose to let that barking dog bother me, or I choose to think about something else. We have very little, if any, control over things that happen outside of our own bodies, but we do have choices in how we deal with those things.” More of Linda’s artwork can be seen at: lindagleitzart.com

The new sculpture illustrates the historic elements to our four major waterways, the Colorado River, the Rio Grande River, the Platte River and the Arkansas River all of which begin here in Colorado. The public is invited to view the exhibit Wednesdays-Fridays 1-5 pm, Saturdays, 1-4 and during the following special events:

Opening: First Friday June 7, 6-9 pm
Artist Reception: June 21, 2013, 5-8 pm

The new 4Rivers sculpture depicts the 4 rivers from source to sea and addresses the question, if all the world is one drop, where does it begin? Here in Colorado. The headwater state. It’s sister piece, the large scale One World, One Water sculpture is shaped as a single drop of water that weaves together watersheds and eco-systems while serving to highlight the importance of Colorado as a headwaters state for several major western rivers. It stands as a testament to how art can facilitate discussion and successfully inspire educational programs as it did with the Center for Urban Water Education and Stewardship now offered at Metro. The intention is to continue to inspire educational programs and discussion about the importance of preserving our waterways.

The exhibit will also feature Sargent’s other new sculpture works that will move the dialogue as a natural progression from water to soil and the integrated role it plays in the eco-system. Additionally, photographs by Pete McBride’s will be shown reflecting his commitment to the Colorado River and the challenge of its being designated Americas Most Endangered River.

Sargent has bridged the conversation about water to new podcast where twice a month, he hosts a discussion of water related issues with leaders in the industry. Past shows can be streamed anytime at www.languageofrivers.com.

It includes a Call for Entry, an Exhibition, Awards Party and People’s Choice Awards, all designed to showcase Santa Fe Drive as a unique art and cultural district.

Artists are invited to submit work to be selected for a “Best of” exhibition to be held at the Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe Drive, in Denver, from July 16 through August. 10.

All artists in all mediums who have exhibited artwork in the District anytime during 2012 and until June 30, 2013 are eligible. Submitted artwork does not necessarily need to have been featured in an exhibition; it is the artists’ participation in the District that qualifies them.

Submissions may be made no later than June 30 to YouJudgeIt.org/BestofSantaFe where complete details are outlined. The entry fee is $30 for up to three pieces per entry and multiple entries are welcome. All submissions must be for sale.

Jurors are Beth Armijo, Principal of Armijo Design Group, an interior design firm; Mark A. Outman, Associate Principal of Fentress Architects, the firm that designed the new Denver Justice Center; and Daliah Singer, associate editor of 5280 Magazine, who writes about art and contributes to all segments of the publication. The jurors will judge artwork based on uniqueness, quality, overall execution and knowledge of medium. Emotional connection and the artist’s ability to clearly communicate will also be considered.

Approximately 40 pieces will be selected for the exhibition. Each juror will award a “Best of Show” and, during the run of the exhibition, gallery visitors may vote for their favorites in the People’s Choice Awards.

“Best of” is coordinated by Art D’Elke, LLC, the collaboration of artist/art consultant Elke McGuire and marketing specialist Denise Robert. For more information, please visit www.ArtDElke.com or call 303-368-5208.
