His photographic style conveys beautifully mysterious aspects of nature, utilizing bold tonal contrasts to create photographs that breathe as much of an air of fantasy as reality. Scott is currently presenting a lecture entitled “Painting with Light”, creating new art, and exhibiting his photographs in galleries around Colorado. Scott was awarded several of B&W Magazine’s top honors in 2010 and 2011, including the Gold Award
From a very young age, it was apparent that art would play a huge role in Matthew Clark’s life. Raised on a healthy diet of Saturday morning cartoons, old Walt Disney classics and children’s books, it was a natural transition for him to start creating his own characters. He scribbled them in the books, on the walls, and any piece of paper he could get his hands on. Matthew’s current style continues to be shaped by these early influences, as well as the new ones he has been introduced to throughout his life. The graphics on the bottoms of skateboards, the flyers from rock shows, and graffiti lining the city streets opened his eyes to new art cultures that instantly grabbed hold of him and can be seen in his work today. Although a self-taught painter and illustrator, Matthew has a formal education in graphic design, which has helped to cultivate new skills and shape the style and applications of his artwork.

This juried exhibition will be held in conjunction with the “Year of Water in Colorado” which celebrates many efforts including the 75th anniversary of the legislation that created many of the water organizations that manage Colorado’s water resources. It will also serve to commemorate the creation of the new “One World, One Water” Water Education Program at Metropolitan State College and the installation of the large outdoor sculpture by the same name. Throughout the year 2012, “Colorado Water 2012” will be connecting Coloradans to their water through resources, events, and activities created by seven “Colorado Water 2012” Committees and by a coalition of over 200 volunteers statewide whose mission is to engage Coloradans in a statewide celebration of water: past, present, and future. Their goal is to have Coloradans to celebrate our unique heritage as a headwaters state and understand the diverse uses and values of this precious resource. For information visit Water2012.org.

A year in the making by Denver artist Rik Sargent, “One World, One Water” is a large bronze outdoor sculpture that was commissioned by a private donor and is to be bequeathed to Metropolitan State College in the Spring of 2012. The 12 foot high, 8 foot deep, 10 foot wide sculpture is an infinity form shaped as single drop of water weaving together watersheds and eco-systems. It has been designed as a unity symbol, combining art, science and education and will honor water education here and around the world.

The commission, creation and subsequent conversations around this creation of this sculpture was like a stone thrown in the water creating a ripple effect of excitement and discussion by a number of individuals and organizations. This swell of enthusiasm ultimately led to the conception and formation of the “Year of Water in Colorado” Celebration. The public is encouraged to participate in the many programs and learning opportunities created by this diverse group of water issue advocates and visionaries. Rik, in particular, is looking forward to the expansion of this movement through the arts by providing occasions, like this juried show, for others to join the conversation.

For more information about the juried show contact Rik at sargentstudio@gmail.com (303) 795-9131.

As an artist, I believe that true meaning cannot be conveyed by the outer appearance of things, but must be recognized on a deeper level of awareness.

Above all, I consider myself a colorist. Colors have a great emotional impact for me, and they are always my starting point. The non-objective forms and textures I use appear in some mysterious way that is very personal.

I deal with abstractions that hint at spirituality and lush colors that create shifting illusions. I believe art is timeless and evokes the spiritual, be it through signs, symbols, colors or forms. For me art represents the timelessness of the human spirit, a never-ending spiraling thread, winding through all ages and cultures, expressing love and passion through the use of color, texture and form.
I like to watch people view my work, and invariably each sees something different and entirely unique to their own experience. I make visible what, without me, might never be seen.

VRBA
New paintings by Vrba. Vrba’s painting and style may be reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, but Vrba is one of a kind. In fact, when he started out, he’d never even heard of the guy. Vrba brings his own unique vision to each of his paintings, with vibrant color and design, and the art world has begun to take notice.

In the CORE Annex Gallery:

Ken-Caryl Art Guild
The Ken-Caryl Art Guild is proud to present our second annual exhibit at CORE New Art Space Annex. The exhibit will contain work of approximately fifteen of our artists and include works in many different media.

The Ken-Caryl Art Guild is a non-profit organization committed to the education and development of artists and the support of the arts in Ken-Caryl Ranch and surrounding communities.

Organized in February of 2004, the Ken-Caryl Art Guild includes artists of all mediums and at all levels of expertise including art professionals, emerging artists, amateurs, students, hobbyists and those interested in appreciating art.

Due to the snow storm we will not be open for First Friday - Please join us next Saturday, February 11th Starting at 6pm

Denver, CO (February 3rd, 2012) – For the first show of 2012 at Black Book Gallery in Denver, CO, the format of the exhibition is just as significant as the individual work itself. In an exploration of togetherness and separateness, among other themes, Ravi Zupa and Lindsay St. Antoine, who also share in a relationship, will be showing somewhat simultaneously, yet in different locations across continents.

Ravi, who held a solo exhibition last fall at Black Book, will be exhibiting at The Outsiders Gallery in London on January 12th, 2012, while Lindsay will be having her first solo exhibition at Black Book Gallery soon afterward, February 3rd, 2012. Nothing Teaches Needs is the title of the dual exhibition and creates dialogue around the subject of where needs originate in both the human psyche as well as in the natural, physical realm. To describe his part of the show, Ravi uses the example of how infants possess inherent answers and tools to satisfy their needs from the start, “Infants emerge from their mothers with perfect knowledge of how to coordinate their mouths and throats to feed.”

For her part, Lindsay has been thrust into a more personal exploration of the themes, which have highlighted dualities in her own process: the desire to express, countered with fear of expressing as well as multiple associations of joy and pain intertwined, all par for the course of the human condition, but perhaps more vividly felt by the person leading a life in which heavy emphasis on art making is present. It is with exhibition of this kind of art that viewers become privileged to witness the boldness of personal expression.

Taken together, with Ravi tackling broader themes of intimacy and needs, while Lindsay translates her own experiences on the same subject, the two create a distinct balance, which is very much male/ female in quality. Lindsay’s work is made up of layer after layer of house paint, acrylic paint, oil paint, oil stick, oil pastel, old paper, graphite pencil, colored pencil, ink, and ballpoint pen, with a bit of screen printing. As part of their collaboration, Ravi has created drawings, block-printed images, and words (which were originally written poetically or spoken insanely) to be incorporated into Lindsay’s paintings. These drawings and prints, carefully made, combined with the raw dirtiness of Lindsay’s painting, give a dreamlike view into the beauty and the mess that can exist within attempted intimacy.

Include yourself in the Denver side of this dynamic exhibition opening February 3rd at Black Book Gallery.

      2012-02-17 At Niza Knoll Gallery

Work by artist Dana Hawk may be fresh in the minds of visitors to Niza Knoll gallery as she has participated in the gallery’s annual dog-themed juried exhibit for two years and recently won “Best 2D in Show” for her piece “Blind Love” depicting a black Labradoodle. As an animal lover herself, owner Niza Knoll has always been drawn to Dana’s paintings and is pleased to present an entire exhibit dedicated to these delightful images.
“Good on the Inside” paintings by Dana Hawk runs February 17 - March 24, 2012 at Niza Knoll Gallery, 915 Santa Fe Drive in Denver. The artwork will be available to view and purchase during regular business hours Wednesday-Friday, 1-5 pm, Saturday, 12-4. The public is also invited to attend the following special events:
Opening Reception: Third Friday, February 17, 5-8 pm
First Friday: March 2, 2012, 3-8 pm
Third Friday: March 16, 2012, 3-8 pm
Dana captures the essence of all her animals—household pets and farm animals alike —with the same warmth and character. The signature piece in the show (The Dog’s Bed) depicts a full size brown spotted cow awkwardly curled up on a small dog bed, while the beds owner, a small pit bull mix looks on in longing and disbelief. The highly realistic animals are often placed in slightly surrealistic environments and situations creating a charm and humor that will take the viewer by surprise. However, in another piece, Portrait of a Silkie Chicken, the personality of the fuzzy yellow baby chicken pops off a clean, simple background and is equally amusing.
“The show title refers to the innate goodness of animals, my inclination to paint them in interior spaces, and my aim to uplift the viewer.” says Dana, “Pattern is visually compelling. I use wallpaper in my paintings to add a mixture of urban and rural aesthetics; positioning a rural farm animal with urban style wallpaper or juxtaposing two wallpaper styles.”
Dana Hawk grew up in St. Louis and eventually made her way to Denver where she received an M.S. degree in Physical Therapy. After moving to the Northwest and feeling a bit unsatisfied with her career path, she met and modeled for a painter named Anne John. Inspired, she bought oil paint and some canvases, started painting, and hasn’t stopped since. She moved with her husband to Wurtsboro, NY in 2010 and is excited to return to Denver for her upcoming show.

Have you ever seen the name or title of a piece of artwork and you did not think it fit the piece? Did you ever wish you could name a piece of artwork yourself? Well, now you can have the opportunity to do just that.
Grace Gallery Artists will be working in their own mediums making a piece of artwork and you can help them name or title their pieces. This will be happening on February 17, 2012 during Third Friday’s reception at Grace Gallery from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. You are invited free of charge to help us name out artwork.
Some of the mediums that our artists will be working in will be Oil Painting, Pottery/Clay/Raku, Photography, Jewelry, Pastel, and Stone/Slate/Sliced Rock, and you can watch them work their magic. Did you ever think that someday people would run out of names for movies, books, and artwork? Well, it just might happen, so we are depending on you to come in and help us think of some new names or titles for newly finished artwork.
