Shape-Shifts

Originally Clare Scott was drawn to painting outside, on the spot, painting “en plein air.” While outside she became acutely aware of, nature’s perpetual dance between permanence and change. In this collection, Clare moved inside, to her studio, to paint a continuum of works that range from subtly altered abstracted landscapes to complete abstracts. Using soft pastels, Clare explored the delicate interplay of color, shape, movement, and texture, capturing the essence of nature's enduring transformations.

The common thread that weaves together Debra Livingston's work in this show is the use of circles and squares. She layers geometric shapes over monotypes to achieve depth and complexity of the image. She see the circles and squares as windows or portals into another dimension.

Debra's mini produce paintings are all circular on square canvases. She is inspired by the contemporary Japanese artists Yayoi Kusama, who uses repetitive dots in much of her work. Seen as a group, her paintings of fruits and vegetables become a bright patchwork quilt of circles on squares.

The small square handmade books in this show were made from repurposed etchings. Feel free to hold these little works of art. Turn the pages as the shapes shift to reveal a continuous image layered with circles and squares.

"ReAwakening" a Group Exhibition

NKollectiv at 960 Santa Fe Drive, presents "ReAwakening" a group exhibition to mark the start of Spring. The show features the gallery’s current mix of local artists and will be introducing a new member to the group, painter Elissa Quist! Guest printmakers Zelga Miller and Timothea Biermann are participating in conjunction with the larger Month of Printmaking celebration. The public is invited to view the show starting March 15 through April 15, during regular business hours Wednesdays through Sundays, and during these special events:

Opening Reception: Friday, March 15, 6–9 pm
First Friday Art Walk: April 5, through 9 pm
Sundays on Santa Fe Art Walk: Sunday, March 31, 11–3 pm
Encaustic Monotypes Demo: Saturday, March 30, 12–4 pm (drop-in)
With Kelly Austin-Rolo and Michele Messenger at the NEW Prism Arts Workshop at Prism Workspaces, 999 Vallejo St. Free to attend.
Artist Talk and Screenprinting Demo: Saturday, April 6, 2 pm at NKollectiv. With Timothea Biermann. Free to attend.

Elissa Quist is an abstract painter based in Denver, Colorado, specializing in oil paint and cold wax. A graduate of Art Center College of Design in California, Elissa’s education spans a distinct combination of both classical and conceptual art. Her practice revolves around the nuanced interplay of 'being' and the external forces that shape our state of mind. Drawing from diverse influences, Elissa navigates the psychological effects of color, incorporating both historical and contemporary, natural and manufactured subject matter to deepen the viewer's connection to her work.

Guest artist Timothea Biermann is a prolific silkscreen printmaker, large-scale abstract painter, teaching artist and co-founder of the Chameleon Art Collective. In addition to other art studies, she graduated with honors with a BFA in ceramics from Maine College of Art and earned an MA in painting from Savannah College of Art and Design. An educator for 25 years, Biermann currently teaches Painting & Drawing at Thomas Jefferson High School in Denver, Colorado.

Guest Artist Zelga Simone Miller uses a range of media, moving between printmaking, drawing and painting, in pursuit of a balance between a sense of stillness and dynamic fluidity. Her work speaks of layers—of peeling back the veneer of the everyday to uncover a sense of disquiet in an otherwise serene scene. Her practice looks beyond the physical elegance of the line and more intensively toward the emotional vulnerability of the figure.

NKollectiv (pronounced N Collective), located at 960 Santa Fe Drive in Denver, is a curated space for local Colorado artists to display and sell their work, grow their practice, and interact with collectors. A variety of work is always on view, including ceramics, metal, glass, wood, jewelry, paintings and other 2D pieces in a variety of media. Visitors are invited to view and purchase work during gallery hours or by appointment. Regular gallery hours are Wednesdays and Thursdays noon-5; Fridays Noon–7 pm, (9 pm on event nights); Saturdays and Sundays 11–4. A selected portfolio of works is available for purchase online at nkollectiv.com along with more information about specific artists and events. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook @nkollectiv.

Hong Hong: A Body at the Center

Hong Hong: A Body at the Center

RULE Gallery is pleased to introduce A Body at the Center, the first major solo presentation of Hong Hong's monumental paintings in the Western United States. The artist will attend a public reception on Friday, March 22, from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibition will be on view through May 18, 2024. Note that new gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 11am-5pm, and by appointment.

Each summer and fall, artist Hong Hong travels to faraway and distinct locations within the United States to create site-responsive, large-scale works made from paper. In this nomadic practice, methods of Chinese paper-making coalesce with painting and monastic rituals. The resulting environmental experimentations chart interstitial relationships between landscape, time, and the body through cartographic, symbolic, and material languages. When the weather is adverse, Hong produces works directly on the floor of her studio. Each combines intergenerational visual story-telling, collaborative texts, and image-making to document states of interiority and subjectivity.

The exhibition at RULE features pieces created over the last five years in New York, Texas, Michigan, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. Through shifts across surface and materiality, they each map a specific place on a particular day during a different season. Poured in consecutive layers and dried beneath the sun, the paper pulp's supple surface remains vulnerable to its environment, giving shape to evolving changes within its surroundings and becoming a collaborative record with nature. A Body at the Center considers the self as a field of activity and an unfolding event. The installation was guided by measurements taken directly from Hong's own body as a reference point. Specifically, the gap between the floating sheet and the gallery wall is equivalent to the distance between Hong's navel and heart. It also examines the body's relationship to exterior as well as interior spaces through installation methods that allude to partitions, gates, floors, pools, and windows.

The keystone of this exhibition is a text-based work. Hidden in shadow, this piece is visible to the viewer but is not legible or comprehensible. The text is an accumulation of Hong's prose, which she wrote as she traveled. This text weaves together Hong's writing with excerpts from text messages, essays, books, and poems. Sections of the text are used as the titles of the projects included in this show.

Shane Cooper Life Unbound: Carving Stories from Forgotten Pages My art explores life's unexpected journey, mirrored in the transformation of discarded reference books. Sealed with care, these once-valued sources become canvases for my exploration. I delve into their depths, unearthing hidden imagery, phrases, and diagrams that resonate with my experience. The process is fraught with frustrations and joys like navigating life, a career path or building a family. Anticipation mingles with uncertainty as I excavate each layer, sometimes finding unexpected beauty and other times encountering dead ends. These moments of discovery and frustration echo the joys and challenges of life itself. Early works mirrored my youthful approach, accepting the initial imagery without pushing boundaries.

However, with time, like life itself, my art has evolved. I now embrace the freedom to dig deeper, punch through limitations, and create pieces with greater depth and expression. Each artwork is unique, a bespoke reflection of the journey within the book and myself. Using scalpels, I meticulously carve page by page, sliver by sliver, until the hidden narrative emerges as a three-dimensional expression, whispering stories waiting to be discovered.

Charisma

D’art Gallery, located at 900 Santa Fe Drive, hosts “Charisma” exhibitions with printmaker Lydia Riegle and ceramicist Jean Smith. The exhibition runs from Thursday, April 11, 2024, through Sunday, May 5th, 2024, with an Opening on Friday, April 12th from 6-8 pm.

The genesis of this exhibition, “Charisma”, focuses on Mid-Century Modern aesthetics and is driven by the compelling attractiveness that inspired devotion and longevity across time and space largely due to its charismatic power. Mid-century modern design is often geometric, and intriguingly simple, with smooth-flowing contours that recognize a quirky playful quality. All of these qualities appeal. Today, because lives are often complex, clean, and simple are appreciated and almost everyone loves quirky, different, or fun. These desired qualities can be used to describe Lydia Riegle’s monotype prints and Jean Smith’s ceramic sculptures for walls and floors. Riegle and Smith believe that visual creative language is often more than line, size, form, texture, or space. They posit that art helps to bring memories to the surface starting a dialogue that then acts as a catalyst to stretch thinking and boundaries adding to the richness of the human experience.

Riegle and Smith look forward to sharing their present-day interpretation of this charismatic, iconic, and timeless way of thinking…Making magic, again!

Andrew Markus Paintings

Andrew will be exhibiting his paintings in the East Gallery at D’art Gallery. A dancer, visual artist, and writer of dubious texts, Andrew Marcus founded DISAPPEARANCE in 2010 to explore boundary space between the ordinary, the beautiful, and the sublime. DISAPPEARANCE develops practices to effectively transcend such boundaries; to encourage experience of the magical and the erotic; and to unequivocally engage the real.

Andrew holds an MFA in Dance and Performance from Arizona State University. His experiments with improvisation and somatic practices date to 1980, and he is active internationally. The SCHOOL OF DISAPPEARANCE opened in 2013. In recent years, the body-mind, as both intra and inter-dependent system, enclosed within larger systems, has become a locus of inquiry beyond aesthetic interventions, having moved Disappearance into territories equally of psyche and socio-political space. These movements have been in response to needs of students and individual clients; as well as presence with social struggles and the critical need for transformation of societal structures, with particular attention paid to the most exploited, suppressed and oppressed communities, populations, and the biosphere. Among important current influences are lacanian psychoanalytic perspectives, adult attachment theory, various strands of continental philosophy, marxist and post-marxist theory including investigations of race within systems of power (racial capitalism) and the trauma of the colonial.

Naturally Occurring

The root of this collection of recent works by Sandy Marvin is her fascination with the grace and beauty of the natural world. It may be the arabesque curves of a garlic scape, a sweep of grama grass or an intimate view along a frozen creek that catches her eye and invites her to interpret her vision in a painting. Sometimes it may also be an interesting arrangement of things, both natural and manmade.

Sandy’s paintings are layered, combining watercolor, water-soluble pencil and soft pastel. She prefers to allow evidence of her process to remain visible in the finished work. Nathan is a sculptural artist using various techniques and mediums with wood being his favorite. In this Naturally Occurring exhibit, he will be using a large variety of the world's exotic and local hardwoods. His new work will include methods such as stack lamination, block carving, and even steam bending. Nathan’s vision for his work comes from nature or an organic interpretation of what he sees. For this show he will be displaying pieces that uniquely portray plants, leaves, seeds and water.

The Unusual Suspects Closing Event and Trunk Show

RULE Gallery invites the public to a special Closing Party on Saturday, March 9, from 12-5p to celebrate the final day of our exhibition, The Unusual Suspects, featuring work by Joe Clower and Amber Cobb. In addition, the gallery will host Denver artisans Vanessa Barcus of Talisman Fine Jewelry and Cornelia Peterson of Cornelia Max Woodworking in a specially curated trunk show in the gallery's viewing room upstairs. Complimentary mimosas and Topo Chico will be served until they are gone.

About the artists:
Talisman Fine Jewelry offers a collection of sculptural, heirloom jewelry that evokes an abstract, modernist sensibility with a decidedly ancient feel. Designed by former Goldyn boutique owner Vanessa Barcus, the line is sustainably handmade using traditional lost wax casting and forming techniques in recycled 14k gold. Although designed as fine jewelry for daily wear, each piece has a strikingly substantial look and feel, riding the lines between everyday jewelry, art, and sacred adornment.

Cornelia Max Woodworking handcrafts utilitarian wooden objects that blur the boundaries between art and function. Peterson thoughtfully carves each piece using various tools in her home studio, emphasizing the wood's grain and shape while embracing the materials' natural imperfection. Rather than plan out shapes or structures, she allows the wood to guide her, allowing each piece to have it's own unique character.

Phillip Potter, "(de)lusion (al)lusion (il)lusion"
I welcome you, the viewer, into the possibility that the world doesn’t exist as you perceive it. The delusion is that we don’t recognize our perception is deluded; we live in a transcontextual world even though we force ourselves into absolutes. As an artist, I make illusions to try to get a better understanding of how my perception operates. Through process, the delusion of time and space loses the absolute of place. Through the use of arbitrary symbol-systems, I see the inaccuracies of language to describe and define our existence. For example, by making minuscule adjusts in color, emotions shift, and experiences shift. Minuscule adjustments transform the illusion into seeing the delusion of symbol into the allusion of perception. We break our delusions through allusion. There are only allusions, not answers. Our salvation comes from the questions, not answers. Everything we see or perceive doesn’t exist as we see or perceive it. Nothing is real, everything is permitted. Nothing inherently exists. It is just our perception of a belief that gives it reality.

Sally Elliot, "All About Eggs and More"
The egg has always held particular symbolic significance, partly because it is a visual shorthand for a new life and unhatched potential. The egg brings hope and purity. It is a symbol of fertility and the circle of life. In some Asian cultures the egg is seen as a symbol of luck and wealth. In my series I have chosen to paint chicken, turkey, emu and ostrich eggs which are coming from an open heart and are bordered with flowers, feathers and shells.

Kat Potter in the North Gallery, "Ageless Parables for Modern Times vol. B"
Most books are written, this one is illustrated. Most introspections are transmitted in words, this one speaks through the visual lexicon. Read this book, as I made it, by drowning out the increasing complexity of our era through quiet contemplation. I find the visual lexicon as robust as the menagerie of the written word. Immerse yourself in colors and contrasts, ponder the weight and weightlessness, forge your own connections to symbols and images. And for a book without words, you can still play word associations. Don’t think too much. I’ll say no more.
