Frequently Asked Questions

What is First Friday Art Walk like?

The First Friday Art Walk happens every first Friday, rain or shine, year round. More than 60 art galleries, artist studios and other creative organizations are open during the Art Walks from 5:30-9:30 p.m. First Friday is free, family-friendly, and may have more than 10,000 art lovers attending in summer months. A free, luxury shuttle rotates through the event every 20 minutes.

Are there places to eat and drink on First Friday?

Yes! There are plenty of diverse places to eat and drink, featuring everything from authentic Mexican to  Ethiopian, Jamaican, Latin/Asian fusion, Thai, Japanese, breweries, and the all-American Buckhorn Exchange, Denver’s oldest continuously operating restaurant.

How about Food Trucks?

Yes, we have them, too! In fact, they became so popular here that we have now set up a special food truck location on 7th Avenue between Santa Fe Dr. and Kalamath St. You’ll find a variety of Denver’s best food trucks there.

Is there vendor space on the street or sidewalks during First Fridays?

Vending on the street is not permitted.

OK, if it’s so popular on First Friday, why don’t you just close the street?

Good question! The city only grants us a few per year given the serious impact it has on traffic flow for the rest of the city. In addition, there are high costs associated with closing the street. To enjoy the street closure, join us for the First Friday Art Walks during the month of August.

Can you at least get those darn narrow sidewalks widened?

We’re working on it! We have put forth a comprehensive vision plan featuring wider sidewalks and reduction of traffic lanes on Santa Fe Drive. Planning has begun with Denver city agencies to get this accomplished.

How about transportation and parking options?

We run a free guided-shuttle coach on First Fridays and have a fair amount of parking on public streets and private lots throughout the Art District. See the Visitor Info page for directions, transportation options, parking areas, and info about our shuttle coach. In addition, we’re just a few blocks from the 10th and Osage light rail stop.

What’s this “Collectors Preview” night all about?

On Third Fridays, member galleries stay open late for a more intimate version of the art walk. Many galleries hold their more traditional exhibit openings on this night. It is a quieter evening and offers a preview of the month’s exhibit and a better chance to speak privately with owners and exhibiting artists. Third Friday of each month takes place from 5:30–8:30 p.m.

Can I visit your galleries, shops and other businesses every day of the month?

Yes! We are professionally operating businesses maintaining regular hours of operation. Hours vary by business, but most are open Tuesdays-Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some open extended hours, including Sundays and Mondays. Check individual member pages or call them directly for exact operating hours.

Any advice for artists WHO want to exhibit on First Friday?

Each gallery has their own criteria for selecting its artists. Our best advice is to view each member gallery on the web, and then visit the ones you think maybe a fit for your style and level of work. You can call the gallery in advance and make an appointment, or visit them in person, but not when they are busy! Trying to show your work to a gallery owner on a First Friday or opening reception when it is the exhibiting artist’s night to shine and the gallery’s night to make sales is the surest way to not ever exhibit there.

Can I rent a gallery for an exhibit or a reception?

Yes. We have an Event Hosting area that shows you which members rent their spaces. Check it out and then contact them directly.

This is great. How do I stay informed about exhibits and other happenings in the Art District?
